Tere Mere Sapne is based on the story of two boys Rahul Mehta and Baalu, who share a birthday but come from different backgrounds: Rahul is wealthy and English-born, while Baalu hails from a middle-class Brahmin family in Mumbai. Their destinies entwine as they swap lives on their 21st birthday.

Raised by his grandfather Shambunath Mehta after losing his parents, Rahul desires to visit their graves in India against his grandfather’s wishes. He eventually escapes guardians Ram Singh and Mirchandani at the airport, aided by a taxi driver, Baalu, unaware of Rahul’s identity. Baalu initially vents his frustration at the wealthy “same-day” stranger but later befriends Rahul.

Preferring Baalu’s life, Rahul proposes a switch. Rahul, now a taxi driver, informs Ram Singh, while Baalu faces challenges adapting to affluence.

Rahul falls for Baalu’s sister Paro, while Baalu meets Pooja, the daughter of Mehta Industries’ caretaker V. P. Mathur. Mehta Industries is plagued by corruption, revealed to Baalu (disguised as Rahul) by union leader Dattabhau. Baalu rectifies this, reopening the company and implementing equal profit sharing for workers.

Paro’s father opposes Rahul due to his Christian background. Baalu mediates and Rahul commits to becoming a Brahmin for marriage. Rahul’s UK-based grandfather intervenes, as Mehta Industries slips from Mathur’s control. A plot emerges to kill Rahul and Shambhunath. Rahul and Baalu thwart the hired gangster, culminating in Rahul marrying Paro and Baalu marrying Pooja.
